However, it was back in 2007 that the idea for Busking For Change was created when Raine Maida from Our Lady Peace set out to the streets with two goals: To raise $30,000 for War Child by busking on the streets of Toronto, and at the same time make a music video for his latest solo hit song Yellow Brick Road. That was a major success, and so War Child ran with the idea. Our Lady Peace was absent from the line-up this year, but with over 50 other artists in 14 locations all over downtown Toronto, there was no shortage of opportunities to get out, see a seriously intimate performance, and donate a bit of money to a good cause. If you like the idea but were unable to get out for the shows, War Child is still accepting donations (as I'm sure they always are). All performances that I saw were very casual, and for many people it was a rare opportunity to be up close and personal with the bands. Highlights of my day included hearing Neverending White Lights cover Time originally by Pink Floyd, meeting up with illScarlett at 102.1 just hours before their 1UP! CD release party, getting to hear The Johnstones for the first time and completely digging their unplugged performance, and lastly getting to hear the Arkells explain why we were about to hear them cover Ms. Jackson by OutKast (which is partially included in the video below).
