Canadian Music Week '09 - Friday Arkells, Amos The Transparent The MOD Club, Rancho Relaxo in Toronto, Ontario on March 13, 2009 Full Photo Set (17 photos) Before heading down to the illScarlett show, I managed to get out to The MOD Club and catch a set by the Arkells. I knew they were town for CMW '09, but didn't think I was going to get to see them otherwise. And after illScarlett I decided to head up to the Rancho Relaxo to see how Amos The Transparent were doing. ArkellsArriving at about 6:55pm at The MOD Club, I was surprised how many people were already out. The place wasn't at capacity yet, but the crowd filled the room fairly densely. Soon after, the Arkells took the stage and they gathered, without instruments, around a couple of mics setup near the front of the stage and opened the set singing an a cappella version of Blueprint. After that, Max Kerman (vocals, guitar) and Mike DeAngelis (guitar) picked up acoustic guitars and the band played toned-down versions of their music. I hadn't realize the Arkells were scheduled to perform an acoustic set, but I'm glad I was there because it was pretty impressive how well the music translated. I guess great songs can be arranged in a number of different ways and the strength of the material still shines through. The set was short, about 20 minutes, and the mood was quite a bit different than I'm used to seeing from this band, but it was an excellent way to start the night. What I didn't know at the time was that I was going to get to see a late night Arkells set at the Rivoli the next night...

(video) Amos The TransparentIt was getting close to 1:00 AM, and I was a little wiped-out from photographing for the past 6 hours (including the full set of illScarlett), but I made my way up to the Rancho Relaxo to finish off the night with one of my current favourite independent bands, Amos The Transparent. I was thinking I would just take it easy, snap a few shots, and enjoy the show before heading home to bed. But Amos The Transparent had something else in mind. They had been scheming, practicing, and were well prepared to put on a stellar performance, far beyond the last time I saw them, and most certainly the best I've seen them yet (even including last year's incredible showing at NXNE). Shortly into the set they took full command of the audience, drawing the crowd into a massive ball of energy by delivering their material in a way I haven't see them do before. The fulcrum of the show still stands out in my mind... it was at the start of the second or third song and I watched them gather closer together in the middle of the stage and then work themselves up into a coordinated singing explosion. It was almost shocking, but the way they pulled it off and then split up to play out the song widened eyes. From that point on, the crowd was fully invested and singing along, and the band reeled from the energy that was being projected at them. They got me worked up and left me with a head full of rock adrenaline. Incredible, incredible set from an independent band that is so obviously ready for the next step.
