I'm really starting to enjoy these Two Way Monologues showcase evenings organized by Dan Wolovick. This is my third time out to one of these nights and the combination of both new and experienced talent with cheap beer just works well. The fact that Rancho Relaxo was filled to capacity this time didn't hurt either. But there's always a musical surprise in store because the bands aren't always what I expect them to be, and this time around the surprise was Mark Berube.
Mark Berube
Playing piano-based indie-folk, there's something about Mark Berube that reminds me of Patrick Watson, and it's not really the music. Maybe there's some similarities between the tone of their voices, but that's not what I'm talking about. It's more their on-stage personality, the easy-going mannerism, musicianship, and resulting vibrant show. Berube plays a few of his numbers on the accordion, but all others while seated at the piano, telling stories through his lyrics, and demonstrating his skill on the keys in between verses. For the final number, he told a strange first-person story while lightly playing a few background notes before pounding out a huge finish that left the audience wide-eyed and cheering.
