Said The Whale at El Mocambo, Toronto (Photos and Review)

Everyone knows that music has the power to change moods, often for the better, and on Wednesday night I got to both observe and experience that effect in response to the show put on by Vancouver-based Said The Whale. Although I'm not sure if all the lyrics have positive slant (I just don't know them all well enough to say), there's something about the music that makes people release endorphins. The set included a good number of songs from their October 13th release, Islands Disappear, an album that has grown on me extremely quickly for one simple reason: It's a really good listen from start to finish.
A good friend of mine has been recommending that I get out to see Said The Whale for a couple of years now, and although I've included them in my picks for NXNE and CMW, my schedule for those festivals just hasn't matched up with their set times. So, up until now, the only way I've seen them perform is during semi-private performances at the Artist Sanctuary, first in Vancouver before the Junos, and then again in Toronto before the MMVAs. Those short performances were pretty fun to witness, and put together with all the tracks from the new album that have become stuck in my brain, I was watching closely for a show in Toronto.
Because the band is fronted by both Tyler Bancroft (vocals, guitar) and Ben Worcester (vocals, guitar), the songs have some variety in vocals and sound that makes for a show that holds interest. In addition to the super-catchy pop song Camillo (The Magician), they also played some of my other favorites from their new album, such as Black Day In December, Emerald Lake AB, and Goodnight Moon. It was amazing how excellent Goodnight Moon sounded live – Tyler's vocals were spot on as he sang along to his ukulele. The entire show displayed the musical talent that makes up this band.
