I'll admit that it's difficult to be objective about a concert when the band creates music that already means a lot to you. But why be objective? I found out about Earlimart in early 2005, a few months after the release of Treble & Tremble in late 2004, a CD that places somewhere in the first few spots of my top 10 of 2005. It's one of those albums I listen to when I need to hide, and it has the power to alter my mood. I also explored Earlimart's back catalogue, which yielded discoveries of other great songs such as We Drink On The Job. Now, almost three years later, Earlimart has released a new CD entitled Mentor Tormentor. To put this all in perspective for you, Earlimart currently sits in the #3 spot of my Top Artists Overall chart on last.fm.

Playing to a group of dedicated fans at the El Mocambo, there were people like me who were surprised (yet happy) that they were getting to see Earlimart in such close quarters. The band had dressed the stage up with an autumn theme, including a few leaves attached to the guitar of Aaron Espinoza (vocals, guitar). I was happy to hear that songs such as We Drink On The Job, Heaven Adores You, and All They Ever Do Is Talk were included in the set, among many others off the new album. Between songs, sounds of crickets and radio static were used to fill-in the guitar tuning-time. The show seemed a little too short to me, but that's always the case whenever you get to see a band that creates music that is a big part of your life.

Addendum: After the show, I spoke with Aaron briefly, and during that conversation he said it's been three years since our last album, at which point I replied I thought it was just over two. Treble & Tremble was released in 2005, wasn't it? Aaron paused, and glanced upwards, sort of like he was trying to remember when the album was actually released, but never really said anything. Now that the alcohol has left my system, I'm guessing that what he was really doing was thinking why is this guy trying to correct me on the release dates of my albums? Yes, well. Yes. It was released in 2004. It seems there's a reason I don't interviews.

OFFICE

Opening the night was a band called OFFICE, who had their bass player Alissa quit the band at some point before coming to Toronto. What is it with bass players? And strangely it's the drummers that get the bad wrap. Well, not for this band, since drummer Erica Corniel did a mighty fine job. It was a pretty good set, too bad they only got to play to the small group of people who showed up early for the show. I've added their album A Night At The Ritz to my download queue on eMusic.com.
