A great line-up is easy to spot, and so from the moment the announcement was made that Paul Price, The Beautiful Unknown, and The Dunes were all playing Tattoo Rock Parlour on May 22nd, I planned on being there. Of course, if you saw my last article, you know that I skipped out on the night to catch We Are The Take, the unfortunate side-effect being that I ended up missing the entire set by The Beautiful Unknown. But now is as good a time as any to introduce you to Tom E, a good friend of mine who is often out at the shows with me. You see, he stayed at Tattoo for that set and even took photos. Tom and I will be working together during NXNE to bring even more coverage, so think of this as a practice round. read more (388 words)

I found out about We Are The Take when they opened for Mariana's Trench, and ever since they've been high on my list of bands to track. I've been out to see them a few more times, once at Tattoo Rock Parlour and once at The Horseshoe, but even though they were in my picks for Canadian Music Week, the schedule I created ended up forcing me to miss them at Lee's Palace. They recently played again at Lee's Palace with Two Hours Traffic, but I wasn't able to make it out to that show either. So when I found out they were playing at Supermarket on a night when I was already planning on being at Tattoo Rock Parlour, I decided to take a brief hiatus to check out another set by We Are The Take. read more (287 words)

Vesta Varro was back in Ontario recently, here to play at the Rogers Spring Music Festival in Hamilton, and they also managed to fit in a couple of shows in Toronto. I joined them at The Hideout, a small venue that I've never been to before, and the mood was decidedly... um... drunk. read more (131 words)

In preparation for the release of their upcoming album, Beyond The Horizon, People In Planes are touring in May and June, a tour that brought them to Toronto for one-night show at the relatively small Rivoli. When I arrived on the scene, there was a sizable crowd outside waiting to get in, made up of the fans that would eventually pack the back room. With no opening band, the night was all about People In Planes and their new material. read more (317 words)

In celebration of one full year of Two Way Monologues showcases, Rancho Relaxo hosted a three day TWM Festival, with four bands each night and a compilation CD included with entrance. I've been to a few of these TWM showcases over the year, and not only do I always have a great time at them, I've seen some surprisingly good sets by bands that were previously unknown to me. Each time I go there I run into more and more people I've met at previous shows. It seems that Dan, the promoter for Rancho Relaxo, has created a little ecosystem for showcasing new talent to a fairly dedicated group of indie music lovers (including two other bloggers Bob and Jen). I could only make it out to Day 2 of the festival which was on Friday night (sadly missing Mark Berube, Tin Bangs, and The Schomberg Fair on Saturday), and like every time I go there on a Friday, I took advantage of the inexpensive pints of delicious micro-brewed beer, listened to some good music, and ultimately had yet another a great time. read more (245 words)

If you saw my article from Friday night of Canadian Music Week, then you might remember that I was a little enthusiastic about a band called Arkells who put on an amazing set at The Horseshoe that night. Honestly, I consider them the "find" of Canadian Music Week, even more so now than before because I've been listening to their EP Deadlines regularly since then. So early last week I discovered they were going to be opening for a band called Sweet Thing at The Mod Club, and I didn't want to miss the opportunity. read more (536 words)

There's a reason the Phoenix was packed last Thursday night, and it's a simple one: The Constantines are just really amazing on stage. They've got this thing where they come out and play really well to grab your interest, then they go down a path that Bryan Webb (vocals, guitar) describes as the ballad section of the evening (which still rocks pretty hard), and then out of nowhere they morph it back into a full-fledged rock show, emanating energy that feeds the crowd. And this time around it was pretty much a double-bill with Attack In Black opening, another band of great musicians. read more (522 words)

People In Planes Ticket Giveaway

Remember People In Planes? They're that 5-piece band from Wales that had that great song If You Talk To Much (My Head Will Explode) playing on the radio in 2006. Also, I took some photos of them playing at the Koolhaus that same year. Well, now they have a new album called Beyond The Horizon due out this summer, and I have a few goodies for you, including a ticket giveaway for their upcoming show in Toronto. read more (232 words)

What a weird night. I arrived at The Horseshoe on Friday in time for Songs From A Room, which I had seen before and knew they delivered screaming-loud rock, and intended to stay until the very end of The Blakes set, another band I've seen before and knew they played loud garage rock. So I was kind of expecting something in the vein of loud rock for the band in between the two, Foxfire. read more (372 words)

Dead Meadow is originally from Washington D.C., formed in 1998, and is currently a three-piece band... although they did expand to a four-piece for at least one album (Feathers). Their self-titled debut album was released in 2000 is the CD responsible for catching my attention, mostly due to the guitar-centric track Greensky Greenlake, which has a bit of a creepy feel to it and reminds me of some earlier Pink Floyd, in a way. I now own three of their CDs, including their latest album, Old Growth, which was just released in February. Their songs come up on my iPod every now and then, always at exactly the right time, like my iPod can tell what mood I'm in. read more (174 words)
