If you know Wintersleep only because of the song Weighty Ghost that is being played on the radio, then you'll either be surprised or blown away by their live act. I fell into the latter category... I just wasn't expecting that. I'm a very recent fan having only picked up their latest album, Welcome To The Night Sky, less than a month ago, but the purchase was based on numerous recommendations I've received over the past year, and even before buying the album I had hoped to get out to see them play at The Horseshoe back in October. But I couldn't make it that night, nor could I make it to The MOD Club show in November. It's now only a few months later, and this time they played to a packed house at the Phoenix Concert Theatre.

I know I already photographed We Are The Take just 20 days ago, but there are a few songs I really liked so I thought I may as well head out to The Horseshoe on Tuesday for another set. I'm getting to know a few of their songs now, and the more I hear the music, the more I like it. Aside from Dreams and Montreal Love Song, there's this other song called 1886 that got me going. I'm not sure when they're playing in Toronto next, but it looks like they're heading up to Montreal for a show on February 15th.

There's always something going on at The Horseshoe on Friday, so I ended up there last week with a group of friends, not only because of the band Hello Beautiful that I've been meaning to get out and see for many months now, but also because two other bands that I'm familiar with were scheduled to play: Trophy and BIGIDEAS, along with one other band I hadn't heard of before called The Hollows.

This is the second time I've been to see Birds Of Wales; the first time was at The Opera House opening for Mariana's Trench. At the time, I didn't really know any of their material, but since then I've acquired their CD and it's one of those albums that has enough good songs, you find yourself listening to it every now and then. So this time around I knew their recorded songs and was able to mentally compare them to their stage show versions. The CD is mellow, indie folk-rock with gentle, clean vocals from Morgan Ross (vocals, guitar). On stage, the songs are the same compositionally, but with the right amount of bonus energy added in.

I'm really starting to enjoy these Two Way Monologues showcase evenings organized by Dan Wolovick. This is my third time out to one of these nights and the combination of both new and experienced talent with cheap beer just works well. The fact that Rancho Relaxo was filled to capacity this time didn't hurt either. But there's always a musical surprise in store because the bands aren't always what I expect them to be, and this time around the surprise was Mark Berube.

Bernadette Gernon (vocals, guitar) is originally from Ireland, but the band B & The North are a Toronto-area group that just returned from a long tour in the U.K. supporting the legendary rock band Status Quo. During that stint they played a variety of arena-sized venues, including Wembley Arena, so coming back to Toronto and playing the stage at The Horseshoe must've either felt oddly restrictive, or possibly like a huge relief.

I saw We Are The Take more or less by accident when I went to photograph Mariana's Trench and Birds Of Wales at The Opera House. They were sandwiched between the other two bands, and so I just happened to be there to hear them. They really caught my attention with a song called Dreams and so I've been looking forward to hearing more from them. The opportunity arose this month with a show at Toronto's new venue Tattoo Rock Parlour.

The Framework been together for just under a year at this point, but not quite in the way most bands materialize. To start with, Ryan Kash, who was a top 30 contestant on Rock Star: INXS, created their MySpace page before teaming up with anyone, or even having any music in mind. And then once he convinced Chris Graham to partner with him, the duo got together and pumped out a song entitled She Thinks I'm Famous. The team was rounded out with Rayanne Lepieszo on keyboards, Scott Winter on bass, and Tobias Smith on drums. Having never performed the song on stage and with only a demo in hand, Ryan and Chris decided to enter it in the Mix 99.9 Radiostar contest. It placed 3rd. Their first show was eventually scheduled for July, and they have been doing about one show a month since then.

Just like last year, I decided to wait until January before publishing the obligatory Best Of Last Year article. As the year comes to a close, there are good concerts, good times, good friends, and good parties. The kind of events that can make you feel all happy and full of life. But then the new year comes and you're left with reality again. Exactly the frame of mind for picking out the real winners. And so, after a day of cold weather, sobriety, and my first day back at work, here are my picks.
The categories are:
- Top 10 Concerts
- Most Memorable Photo
- Top 10 Albums
- Biggest Disappointment

One more illScarlett show to finish the year! And I was thinking I wouldn't bother writing about the concert given that I have written about them many times this year already. The thing is, there are a few things worth saying, but I'll keep it short. Oh, you have to check out the opening band from Friday night: Down With Webster, a band that lives and grew up in my area of the city. (Unrelated note: This is my 200th article on this site. Wow.)
