Since I knew I wasn't going to make it to the actual Edgefest, I decided to take a trip to the fairly inconvenient Sound Academy for the Edgefest Eve party, featuring The Flatliners, Hostage Life, Alpha Galates, Creature, and Arkells - five bands that were all scheduled to take the stage the next day at Edgefest. Martin Streek was doing his evening radio show from the Sound Academy, and for each band there was some setup, an on-air interview followed immediately by two songs live-to-air, then a couple of more songs for the crowd. Actually, the "crowd" was reasonably small for such a large venue, so the performances were done with the fans right up on stage with the bands. Very casual and friendly. read more (314 words)

Have I mentioned that I think We Are The Take are one of the hottest bands in Toronto? Oh right, I have. Well, then you won't be surprised to discover that when they played the El Mocambo near the end of June, I was hanging out near the stage taking a few photos and really enjoying Dreams, Montreal Love Song, and the other songs of theirs that I'm getting to know better with each show. After We Are The Take was Bad Flirt, and I was having a good time so I stuck around to hear them as well. read more (162 words)

I've seen Patrick Krief perform a few times, and it's always good, but when he's really on, it can be pretty amazing. Apparently the set at the El Mocambo during NXNE under the new band name Black Diamond Bay was excellent. I missed that show, but they played later in June at The Horseshoe, and it seemed like a good time for another dose of his music. The other thing that got me out is that Dave Bidini (previously of the Rheostatics) was scheduled to close the night, and I figured it would be good to hear what he's been up to. read more (248 words)

After spending four late nights out being a part of NXNE, and despite the fact I was suffering from symptoms of sleep deprivation, I headed out to see My Morning Jacket, who rolled through Toronto just one day after NXNE all ended. I had heard amazing things about their shows, all backed up by the pretty incredible live recording Okonokos, so it just seemed like the right thing to do. They came to Toronto straight from Bonnaroo, where we were told that their equipment got caught up in a bit of a rainstorm. And even though Jim James (vocals, guitar) mentioned that they were having a few equipment issues, I wouldn't have noticed if he hadn't mentioned it. read more (291 words)

For the most part, I think Tom is back to his normal life now, but I'm sure he'll still be joining me regularly for shows, and even bringing his camera along every now and then. read more (487 words)

Saturday is always a conflicted night for me, with lots of great shows scheduled, but also lots fun things to do other than concerts. That's just the way it is. I tell you this because when Saturday night of NXNE arrived, I started out at a friend's party where people were making up various martinis. Mine was called the Cat Peetini and was a mixture of Gin, Vermouth, and Limoncello. Nothing better than a drink that reminds you of cat urine, right? So when I left the party, I was appropriately lubed and ready for some shows, but I didn't manage to get out until midnight. This meant I missed Spiral Beach at The Horseshoe, which I really wanted to see. So first stop was the Cadillac Lounge for Revival Dear and Entire Cities, and then for a pretty serious change of pace, I headed over to The Horseshoe for Ladyhawk. read more (542 words)

[Note From Pete] Once again, Tom reports in on NXNE. On Friday, our paths only crossed once, and that was only for a few minutes of Bedouin Soundclash. Since the place was insane and Tom was going to stick it out, I left him to his own devices and I headed over to Hot Springs. Anyway, here is Tom's Friday night. read more (554 words)

I've become what I like to call concert-friends with the guys in illScarlett, their friends, and some of their fans. So when illScarlett is playing in Toronto, you'll often find me lurking around the stage and working on some photos, like I was for their NXNE Extra show at the Sound Academy. Getting out to see them also meant getting to see both Down With Webster and Daniel Wesley. And when the show at the Sound Academy was over, I headed up to College St. to catch a few independent acts. read more (641 words)

[Note From Pete] This article is by Tom E who is a long time friend of mine, and whether you see him or not, he's often out at the shows with me, sometimes providing valuable feedback on performances from a different perspective... the back of the room. But for NXNE, Tom E wielded a camera and was out there checking out bands from the front lines so that, together, we could bring you even more independent action. If you know what I mean. So here is Tom's first article... enjoy! If you like Tom's work, please go Find Tom on Facebook. read more (490 words)

Whenever these festivals start, I always have this crazy idea that I can see everything everywhere, and then the first day usually puts me in my place. But Thursday of NXNE was run so well, with everything more or less starting on time, that the night went according to plan... meaning that I actually managed to get out and see nine bands play, although for two of them I only saw about 3 songs each. Most of the bands I saw on Thursday were amazing and I ended up having a really excellent time during this memorable night. In fact, Thursday was the definition of why I love NXNE. Getting around was pretty crazy, though, and not to be repeated... so I didn't see nearly as many bands on Friday or Saturday. read more (1,305 words)
